The Thanksgiving box office is off to a decidedly worrisome start, with totals down compared to other years.
It seems to be feast or famine for Disney. While Marvel Studios Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will remain atop the box office charts for a third weekend in a row with a hearty $60 million to $62 million over five days (Wednesday through Sunday), Disney Animation A strange world is bombing.
Wakanda forever led Wednesday with $10 million from 4,174 theaters for a domestic total of $313.7 million, followed by $8.1 million on Thursday.
There was no feasting on Thanksgiving A strange world, which reported a first-day gross of $4.2 million from 4,174 sites on Wednesday after earning a tepid B CinemaScore. On Thanksgiving, the film grossed $2.5 million and reduced already muted projections.
at this rate A strange world is looking at a five-day opening of $20-24 million, Disney Animation’s worst opening for a Thanksgiving title in the modern era. (Disney Animation titles such as Frozen franchises, usually dominated by holidays.)
Last year, Magic reported a five-day earnings of $40.6 million after earning $7.8 million on Wednesday, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. And in 2019 Frozen 2 grossed a record $125 million in five days.
A strange world opens just days after Bob Iger returns as Walt Disney Co. CEO. after the shocking ouster of Bob Chapek.
There are plenty of other new movies vying for a place at the Thanksgiving table as well, but many fail to appeal to mainstream audiences.
The big mystery is with Rian Johnson The Glass Onion: The Mystery of the Knives, featuring a cast led by Daniel Craig. Netflix is not expected to report box office sales, in line with its long-standing practice of keeping numbers under wraps. But rival Hollywood studios believe the sequel, which is playing in nearly 638 theaters in the U.S. and 60 locations in Canada, could earn $10 million to $12 million domestically in five days, putting it ahead of other films that they are for adults.
Glass onion is getting an unprecedented release and is the first of the streamer’s titles to play in all three of the country’s biggest chains – AMC Theatres, Regal Cinemas and Cinemark Theatres.
Distribution executives still have their way of gathering data directly from contacts at the show, two sources say The Hollywood Reporter that Johnson’s sequel likely earned $2 million on Wednesday and $1.9 million on Thursday.
While the sequel opens to far less than the $41.4 million that Johnson’s earned Knives Out through Thanksgiving 2019 — the first film had the benefit of receiving a traditional theatrical release from Lionsgate in more than 3,800 locations — it beats out several other new Thanksgiving entries that cater to adults. Netflix shows off Glass onion as a weekly special preview.
On Wednesday, Sony’s Korean War drama Devotion, about two naval fighter pilots, earned $1.8 million from 3,228 locations for a projected 5-day gross of $9.3 million. He stars in the film, which earned an additional $1.2 million on Thursday Top Gun: Maverick’Glen Powell and Jonathan Majors.
Epicurean horror comedy Searchlight Offerheading into its second weekend, it landed in No. 4 on Wednesday with around $1.1M from 3,228 locations for a solid five-day haul of around $8M.
Luca Guadagnino Prize Contender Bones and all — about two young lovers and cannibals played by Taylor Russell and Timothée Chalamet who go on a road trip — grossed an estimated $921,000 on Wednesday as it expanded to a total of 2,727 theaters after opening in select theaters last weekend. The special expects a subdued five-day gross of $4 million. He earned $436,000 on Thursday.
Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical film The Fabelmansa key awards player, is getting off to a slower start in hopes of emulating the success of the Oscar-winning film Green book. Spielberg’s latest film opened in New York and Los Angeles the weekend of Nov. 11-13 before expanding to 637 locations on Wednesday. From Universal and Amblin, the picture earned an estimated $400,000 on Wednesday and $470,000 on Thursday for a projected five-day cume of $3 million to $3.5 million.
Holdover Black Adam is also in the mix with an expected five-day gross of $4 million or so from 2,842 theaters. It arrived in the digital version on November 22.
The studios point out that projections could shift again once they have Black Friday sales.
